Abundância e distribuição de Aeglidae (Crustacea: Anomura) em função do uso da terra na bacia hidrográfica do Rio Jacutinga, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Trevisan,André; Hepp,Luiz Ubiratan; Santos,Sandro.
This study investigated the influence of land use and occupation on the density and distribution of aeglids in the hydrographic basin of the Jacutinga river (northern state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). Sampling was carried out during the summer and winter of 2004, at 12 sites distributed in river spring, agriculture, grazing, and urban areas. Animals were collected using a Surber sampler. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to evaluate differences in the density of species in each land use and sampling period. Biological data were classified using cluster analysis (Euclidian distance; UPGMA). A total of 226 aeglids were captured, including 167 (78.89%) specimens of Aegla platensis Schmitt, 1942 and 59 (26.11%) specimens of A. singularis...

Benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages structure in two headwater streams, south-eastern Brazil Zoologia
Tupinambás,Taynan H.; Callisto,Marcos; Santos,Gilmar B..
From December 2003 to September 2004, benthic macroinvertebrates (BM), fishes, water and sediment were collected quarterly at six stations in two streams of the upper São Francisco River basin, south-eastern Brazil. We evaluated the ecological conditions, habitat diversity, water quality, composition and structure of BM communities, as well as the food habits of the local fish fauna. By applying a protocol for rapid characterization of ecological conditions and habitat diversity, three of the sampled localities were classified as "pristine" while the others stations were considered "altered". A well oxygenated water with near neutral pH and low electric conductivity (< 0.01 mS/cm) and nutrient concentrations (< 0.08 mg/l total P and < 0.90 mg/l...

Bioindicators in radiation protection BABT
Amaral,Ademir; Fernandes,Thiago Salazar; Cavalcanti,Mariana Brayner.
Biodosimetry is the evaluation of absorbed dose using bioindicators. Among chromosomal aberrations, scoring of dicentrics from peripheral human blood has been used as gold standard for biodosimetry, although in case of large scale incidents its use presents some drawbacks. Advances in technology have led to new investigations allowing or permitting the use of new methods which not only improve this "classical" biodosimetry but permits the design of other bioindicators making possible faster analyses, particularly in events where many persons may have been exposed. This report presents an overview of some recent studies developed by the "Grupo de Estudos em Radioproteção e Radioecologia - GERAR", Nuclear Energy Department of UFPE - Brazil, involving...

Distribution and abundance of Chironomidae (Diptera, Insecta) in an impacted watershed in South-east Brazil BJB
MARQUES,M. M. G. S. M.; BARBOSA,F. A. R.; CALLISTO,M..
Patterns of abundance and distribution of chironomid midges (Diptera, Chironomidae) in the middle Rio Doce basin were analysed. Human activities (mining, steel processing, and Eucalyptus spp. forestry) contribute to environmental degradation and low water quality in this watershed. Physical and chemical water traits (dissolved oxygen, pH, total alkalinity, electric conductivity, phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations) of 20 sampling points were used in a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to establish the best and worst water quality. Sampling points recorded as the most polluted showed low genus richness of Chironomidae, less than five genera from the total 23, and dominance of the genus Chironomus, a bioindicator of environmental stress. Following...

Distribution quantitative de la meiofaune dans un milieu fortement anthropise : le vieux port de Bizerte (Tunisie) OceanDocs
Essid, N.; Mahmoudi, E.; Beyrem, H.; Aissa, P.; Hedfi, A..
The survey of sediment and hydrological parameters in the old harbor of Bizerte has revealed that this ecosystem knows a high anthropogenic pressure. In this area waters were characterized by weak contents in dissolved oxygen and sediments, rich in fine fraction, were loaded in hydrocarbons and in organic matter. The free-living nematodes, predominant taxa, responded to these disturbances by a significant decrease in their densities and their biomasses and had tendency, notably at the most isolated sites, to penetrate deeply to escape surface sediments highly loaded in hydrocarbons and in organic matter.

Evaluation of the use of Leptodactylus ocellatus (Anura: Leptodactylidae) frog tissues as bioindicator of metal contamination in Contas River, Northeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
CORREIA,LÍVIA O.; SIQUEIRA JÚNIOR,SÉRGIO; CARNEIRO,PAULO L.S.; BEZERRA,MARCOS A..
This paper presents a study on the viability of the use of tissues of the Leptodactylus ocellatus species (Anura Leptodactylidae) as a bioindicator of metal pollution. The study is based on the determination and correlation of the concentrations of manganese, chromium, zinc, nickel, copper and iron in sediments and tissues (skin, muscles and viscera) of the frog Leptodactylus ocellatus collected in the middle region of the Contas River in Bahia, Brazil. The highest levels of the metals studied were found in the viscera of this animal. In this tissue, a higher correlation of the concentration of these metals with those found in sediments was also observed. The concentrations of elements found in the skin and muscles of these amphibians have revealed no...

Evidence of mutagenic and lethal effects of herbicides on Amazonian frogs Acta Amazonica
FERRANTE,Lucas; FEARNSIDE,Philip M..
ABSTRACT Amphibians are excellent bioindicators because they are sensitive to chemical pollution and can indicate ecosystem changes due to the presence of or exposure to chemical compounds. Here we report evidence of the impact of herbicides, including glyphosate, on amphibians in a locality in the central Brazilian Amazon and compare it with data from other biomes in Brazil. We observed malformations in three species of Leptodactylus and local extinctions of Scinax ruber and Rhinella marina from reproductive sites close to an area where herbicides had been applied. The observations in the Amazon are similar to reports from Brazil’s Atlantic forest on morphological anomalies and mortality in amphibians exposed to herbicides. We warn of the threat of...

Factors determining the distribution of foraminiferal assemblages in Port Joinville Harbor (Ile d'Yeu, France): the influence of pollution ArchiMer
Debenay, Jean-pierre; Tsakiridis, Erica; Soulard, René; Grossel, Hubert.
Port Joinville harbor is located on an island. Thus, it receives only a few freshwater inputs, contrary to most of the areas where the influence of pollution on foraminiferal assemblages has been studied. The pollution in the harbor mainly results from the boats, including cleaning, painting and outfall of oil and motor-fuel.A total of 59 sediment samples was collected at three sampling periods (November-December 1997, May 1998 and September 1998). These samplings were supplemented by the study of algal flora and macrobenthos and by the study of water circulation by means of six stations where water was collected every hour during a tide cycle. Contaminants were analyzed in the last series of 17 samples. Total assemblages were used for this study. This...
